Club History

Century Toppers name was chosen as 1958 was Victoria's Centennial Year and the club went from year 99 to year 100 - thus "Century Toppers". The original membership grew to around 30 with meetings held at the James Bay Scout Hall on Dallas Road, Victoria. Car washes and other activities were put on to raise funds for the club. Challenge blood donor drives between other car clubs and the Century Toppers became a popular thing!

The yellow jacket design was approved by members and Hocking & Forbes was given the go ahead to produce 30 jackets at around $25.00 each! It took six months or more for each member to pay.

Century Toppers assisted the "Quarter Milers" to host 1958's "Centennial Autorama" in the Victoria Curling Rink. It was the biggest car show the city had ever seen. Toppers were instrumental in forming Island timing Association which was an inter club organization for drag racing records etc. at the old Bamberton and Cobble Hill drag strips.

As most teenage things go, the Club slowly disbanded because of marriages, relocations, jobs, etc. and ended around 1964 with members keeping in touch. In 1987 a few old members got together and decided to resurrect the club. Old members, as many as could be found, were contacted and in the spring of 1988 the Club was re-established. Membership now hovers between 50 - 80 with a high point of 120 with members owning much nicer and safer cars than were available in 1957, although the cars are the same age as the ones back then.
